It was on this day, five years ago, that Parks and Recreation aired an episode called “Galetine’s Day.” And what you ask is Galentine’s Day?
Here’s the official definition:
Oh, it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, Leslie Knope and her lady friends leave their husbands and their boyfriends at home and just kick it breakfast style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus, frittatas!
As you may remember, Amy Poehler’s memoir Yes, Please! was among the best books I read last year, so I’m in a mood to do anything and everything related to her and her genius.
Oh, also? I would add to that that the person you leave at home doesn’t have to be a husband or a boyfriend but could easily be a wife or girlfriend or, like mine, a romantic euphemism of rarely specified gender. That’s cool too.
ANYWAY. The reason we’re talking about this is that I’m participating in a Galentine’s Day “Ask Me Anything” on Reddit, which I expect to be at least as much fun as a thematic Buzzfeed listical – a la:
The other folks doing the AMA with me are Hannah Fry, Michele Young-Stone, and Elena Gorokhova. Click those links. Seriously. What the hell am I doing on a list with people that smart and amazing? I don’t know. I snuck in. Don’t tell anyone.
In particular – and in keeping with the theme of Galentine’s Day – my be-crush on Hannah Fry is pretty serious. Because this:
I mean, right?
My own dissertation was a computer simulation of a complex system! There’s a serious risk we could get VERY geeky together!
Or we might just talk about dating and love and sex and orgasms and THAT WOULD ALSO BE AWESOME.
Okay! So I hope you’ll join us, on Reddit, 11am EST, on Friday the 13th.
